How Hangar One
came into being

Hangar One is more than just a building. It connects aviation history with the present and future of the Lufthansa Group. Find out here how an idea became a place for encounters, exhibitions, and innovation.

From vision to reality

Opening in summer 2026

In the anniversary year 2026, Hangar One will be open to visitors for the first time. As an exhibition, meeting, and event venue, it will become a gathering place for employees, guests, and the public.

Space for icons

The Lufthansa legends Ju 52 D-AQUI and Super Star D-ALAN take center stage in Hangar One. The building is specially designed and constructed to accommodate their dimensions and permanent display.

Relocation of "Aunty Ju”

In the summer of 2025, after four years with the Quax Association, the Ju 52 D-AQUI ends its time at Paderborn-Lippstadt Airport. "Aunty Ju” remains in the possession of the Deutsche Lufthansa Berlin-Stiftung (DLBS) and is dismantled into individual parts and transported to Frankfurt. From fall 2025, it is reunited with its sister exhibit, the Super Star D-ALAN, under one roof in Hangar One. The Ju is meticulously rebuilt there by hand.

With our Ju 52, we are preserving the history of Lufthansa and aviation. As a central exhibit, it will enrich the exhibition in Hangar One and be accessible to employees, aviation enthusiasts, and the public.”

Long-haul lady ends her slumber

For years, the elegant Super Star D-ALAN slumbered in Hamburg, dismantled into a mix of individual pieces and several large components and distributed across hundreds of crates. Brought back to life, it is given a fresh coat of paint in the historic design of the 1950s at Münster-Osnabrück Airport. After being transported further, it is welcomed in Frankfurt. The final assembly takes place on site in Hangar One by colleagues from Lufthansa Technik.

Assembling the Super Star was a very special moment. We had 300 boxes and four large components. It was a huge puzzle.”

Building with precision

In a short period of time, a striking building is growing next to the Lufthansa Aviation Center. Planning, construction, and logistics are intertwined – with the aim of creating a place that combines functionality, architecture, and aviation history.

A hangar that combines everything

Construction began in April 2024, creating a new home for Ju and Super Star. From the outset, Hangar One is intended to be a place for Lufthansa Group employees, customers, business partners, and aviation enthusiasts to meet, collaborate, and exchange ideas. The goal: to open in time for Lufthansa's 100th anniversary in 2026. The name also reflects this idea: more than 1,000 Lufthansa Group employees took part in choosing it. “Hangar One” was the winning entry: “Hangar” combines technology and tradition, while “One” symbolizes the Group’s strength across all airlines and subsidiaries.
